Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) was captivated by cypresses during his convalescence at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889), a celebrated artwork housed in the Museum’s collection of European paintings and reproduced on this luxurious silk scarf, is among his exuberant compositions featuring the towering trees. The artist regarded this painting as one of his “best” summer landscapes.
